About the
Pines Inn & Cottages

The Pines is a small inn the way it used to mean something — seven rooms and a cottage on landscaped grounds, run by the people who live on the property and answer the phone themselves. It's been thoughtfully renovated: modern beds, clean lines, real kitchenettes, air conditioning that works. But the character stayed. The koi pond stayed. The fire pit stayed. The garden, the lawn, the trails out the back gate all stayed.

What we set out to make is the kind of place you'd recommend to a friend without a single caveat. Quiet when you want it. Walkable to downtown when you don't. A king studio for an easy weekend, a suite for room to spread out, a cottage with a full kitchen for a longer stay. Every room pet-friendly, because a dog is family and family travels together.

We're not a resort and we're not a chain, and we don't pretend to be either. There's no pool, no restaurant, no front desk to wait at. What there is instead is grounds you actually want to sit in, a welcome that remembers your name the second time around, and a host's-eye view of Grass Valley that you won't get from a booking site.

Come once and you'll see why so many guests come back.

How We Do Things

Check-in is on your schedule. There's no front desk and no line — we text you a personal door code the morning you arrive, and you let yourself in any time after 3 pm. Your hosts live on the property, so if you need anything during the stay, a text gets a quick answer.

Dogs are welcome, free, with no breed or size rules — the yard's out front for the morning, the trails are out back for the longer walk. We keep the grounds open and the refreshments out. And we're glad to point you to the right dinner, the right trail, or the right tasting room. Just ask.

The Grounds

At The Pines Inn & Cottages, your stay extends far beyond your room. Set on beautifully landscaped grounds just outside downtown Grass Valley, our boutique inn offers inviting outdoor spaces where you can slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Unlike many boutique inns that greet you with a traditional lobby, we welcome you with gardens, fresh mountain air, and places to gather and unwind. Relax beside the fire pit under the stars, watch colorful koi glide through the pond, stroll the garden paths, or step through the back gate for direct access to nearby trails. Whether you're sipping your morning coffee outdoors or ending the day by the fire, our grounds are designed to be just as memorable as your accommodations.

What Guests Come Back For

The same few things come up again and again: the welcome, the grounds, and the quiet. Guests mention being met at the car, a door code set and ready, fresh watermelon and chilled wine on a warm afternoon. They mention the koi pond at seven in the morning and the fire pit at nine at night. They mention walking the dog on the trails and walking themselves into town for dinner.
